Enjoy a leisurely steam ride with the most beautiful scenery, a visit to the stunning 19th century Cyfarthfa Castle and simply enjoying the great outdoors – Merthyr Tydfil is filled with experiences – here’s just a taster in a 1 day whistle stop visit
Stop 1 – Cyfarthfa Park & Museum – an imposing 1824 ironmaster’s castle which now houses a museum with a collection of fine art and social history items.
Stop 2 – Brecon Mountain Railway - Travel behind a vintage steam locomotive through beautiful scenery of the Brecon Beacons National Park along the full length of the Taf Fechan Reservoir to Doly-Gaer – you can enjoy a walk in the beautiful countryside before returning on the next train.
Stop 3 – Merthyr Tydfil – take one of the themed walks that bring the history of this Iron Town to life – for instance A PetticoatTrail, to explore the history of Merthyr’s women, or follow In the Footsteps of Dic Penderyn, the hero, villain or victim of the 1831 Merthyr Rising, or get Off the Rails, which highlights the part that Merthyr Tydfil played in the development of the railways.
Stop 4 – Trago Merthyr Tydfil – a great shopping refreshment stop – you could even pick up some items for a picnic at the next stop.
Stop 5 – Parc Taf Bargoed – a country parc on a former colliery site which has been regenerated as a haven for wildlife and a centre for community activities – great for a picnic as the sun goes down.
