Merthyr Tydfil - a taster!

History, steam trains and nature

Enjoy a leisurely steam ride with the most beautiful scenery, a visit to the stunning 19th century Cyfarthfa Castle and simply enjoying the great outdoors – Merthyr Tydfil is filled with experiences – here’s just a taster in a 1 day whistle stop visit

Explore Merthyr Tydfil

Stop 1Cyfarthfa Park & Museum – an imposing 1824 ironmaster’s castle which now houses a museum with a collection of fine art and social history items.

Stop 2Brecon Mountain Railway - Travel behind a vintage steam locomotive through beautiful scenery of the Brecon Beacons National Park along the full length of the Taf Fechan Reservoir to Doly-Gaer – you can enjoy a walk in the beautiful countryside before returning on the next train.

Stop 3Merthyr Tydfil – take one of the themed walks that bring the history of this Iron Town to life – for instance A PetticoatTrail, to explore the history of Merthyr’s women, or follow In the Footsteps of Dic Penderyn, the hero, villain or victim of the 1831 Merthyr Rising, or get Off the Rails, which highlights the part that Merthyr Tydfil played in the development of the railways.

Stop 4Trago Merthyr Tydfil – a great shopping refreshment stop – you could even pick up some items for a picnic at the next stop.

Stop 5Parc Taf Bargoed – a country parc on a former colliery site which has been regenerated as a haven for wildlife and a centre for community activities – great for a picnic as the sun goes down.

Merthyr Tydfil has lots more to offer visitors - especially those who love getting adventurous:

  • BikePark Wales is the best mountain bike centre in Wales (if not the UK).
  • Rock UK has amazing rock climbing and other adventurous activities to get to grips with.
  • For watersports then try Parkwood Outdoors Dolygaer.
  • The area is filled with great walk routes, from the near by (and ever popular) Pen y Fan, to family walk routes around Garwnant.
