There’s much to see and do in Monmouthshire. Whether you prefer the great outdoors, uncovering history or a little bit of luxury, we’ve got it all covered with this one day itinerary.
Stop 1 – Caldicot Castle was built by the Normans and later became a Victorian era family home. Step inside the castle and wander through its medieval towers, mysterious rooms, and atmospheric dungeon. The castle is surrounded by 55 acres of parkland.
Stop 2 – Tintern Abbey is a national icon — still standing in roofless splendour on the banks of the River Wye nearly 500 years since its tragic fall from grace. The Abbey was founded in 1131 by Cistercian monks.
Stop 3 – The Old Station, Tintern is a beautiful, award-winning country park in the Wye Valley. Take in the scenery with delicious cakes, sandwiches and ice creams in the café, a former Victorian railway station ticket office.
Stop 4 - Monmouth Town - take some time to wonder around this compact town with it's iconic 13th century gatehouse bridge, and connections to Henry V and Rolls of Monmouth (of Rolls Royce fame).
Stop 5 – White Castle Vineyard, Abergavenny is vineyard producing some of the best Welsh wine. They offer tours and tastings in a peaceful rural location.
Stop 6 – Afternoon tea at the Angel Hotel is a real treat and they have won many awards for the wonderful selection of teas, sandwiches, pastries and cakes.

On the banks of the River Wye, Tintern Abbey is a national icon — still standing in roofless splendour on the banks of the River Wye nearly 500 years since its tragic fall from grace. It was founded in 1131 by Cistercian monks, originally as a group of timber buildings. Work on the imposing Gothis stone Abbey didn't start until 1269. It started to become a majestic ruin with the first round of the dissolution of the monasteries.
