Description
Abergavenny Steam Rally ticks every one of the above boxes. It is unusual in that it takes place in a park in the centre of town so every inch of space is used carefully so that at every turn, every step there is something new, different or nostalgic to look at.
Centre stage are the magnificent steam engines, belching smoke, clanking and chuffing. A steam organ provides the music for a wonderful dance team and old fashioned entertainment aimed particularly at younger visitors. Old vehicles, lorries, buses and military classic cars are in abundance, provoking usually dads to say, “we had one of those, wonder what happened to it?”
A craft tent with thought provoking exhibits, row upon row of stalls selling car jumble, personalised walking sticks made while you wait, birds of prey, what about a collection of tractor seats?
Home produce and plants are always popular as is the funfair and food village, always popular to rest the feet after all that walking around.
And then there are the arena events, this year, Spanish horses will give an incredible display with their riders showing the meeting of minds of human and animals in a show that stretches dexterity and showmanship to the limit. Also in the arena, displays of motor-bikes, cars, miniature traction engines, might steamers and a yearly attraction, the famous tug of war between a steamer and as many children that want to take part. Sweets all round!
