Watersports

Sufing at Rest BaySurfing, Wind surfing, sea kayaking, scuba diving, kite surfing, canal boats, fishing mean that however active you want to be on the water, Southern Wales is the place to be.

Porthcawl, on Wales’ Golden Coast, is the water sports capital of Wales. The surf at the town’s Rest Bay is superb, making it the first choice for experienced surfers who prefer to avoid the busier better-known surfing resorts. For those keen to catch some waves for the first time local qualified instructors are available to provide lessons.

KayakingDon’t fancy surfing? Don’t worry as there are plenty of other watersports to keep your adrenaline pumping on the Southern Wales Coast. Take a Sea Kayak to discover the hidden coves or see what’s beneath the water by scuba diving. Why not try the relatively new sport of Kite Surfing? A strange but spectacular combination of surfing and kite flying. All equipment and lessons are available locally.

Of course not all water sports take place on the coast. Head inland to one of the region’s lakes for a spot of windsurfing – Cosmeston Lakes at Penarth, Llangorse Reservoir in the Brecon Beacons or Parc Bryn Bach in Tredegar are popular locations.

FishingFor water sports that are a little less strenuous how about trying your hand at fishing. Beacons Reservoir, just north of Merthyr Tydfil and Llandegfedd Reservoir between Usk and Pontypool are popular locations as are the many rivers in the region. For something even more relaxing why not hire a canal boat and go on a leisurely cruise along the Monmouth and Brecon canal. It’s here you can truly appreciate the wonderful countryside and laid back nature of Southern Wales.
