Cycling in Southern Wales

CyclingWith traffic free cycle paths and quiet country lanes, taking to the saddle is probably one of the best ways of seeing Southern Wales. There are many routes criss crossing the region and by taking one of these you are bound to come across some of the hidden gems of Southern Wales which will make your holiday one to remember. Information and maps of cycle routes are available from local Tourist Information Centres.

Lon Las Cymru

Lon Las Cymru is part of the National Cycle Network, and arguably is the most specacular. It is a mix of dedicated cycle paths, quiet country lanes and disused railway lines and runs the length of Wales. It will take you to parts of Wales that are well off the beaten track where no cars can get to.

Taff Trail

Taff TrailAs well as being a popular walking route, the Taff Trail is also ideal for cyclists. Stretching from Cardiff Bay all the way along the River Taff to the Brecon Beacons, the Taff Trail is probably one of the most popular routes in Southern Wales. It takes you northwards through the Capital City and out into the spectacular scenery of the Southern Wales Valleys where you’ll be in awe at the magnificent views you’ll encounter.

 

Celtic Trail

The Celtic Trail is a spectacular cycle route which takes you from Chepstow in the east right through to Pembrokeshire in the west. You have two choices on this route. Either take the low level route or take the high level route which, although more challenging, has greater rewards. As you climb to 2000ft above sea level your views of Southern Wales will be breathtaking.

Mountain Biking

Cwmcarn Mountain Biking CentreFor those who like their cycling to be a bit more on the rugged side then Southern Wales can cater you to. The Mountain Biking here is superb. The Mountain Biking at Cwmcarn and nearby Afan Argoed is considered to be amongst the best in the world.

The Twrch Trail at Cwmcarn is truly exhilarating. Almost 16km of unrelenting twists, sharp turns, gruelling climbs and heart stopping descents. If, after all that, you’re able to take your eyes off the track, the views from the top of the mountain are simply breathtaking and well worth the effort of riding to the top.

Cycling Events

Such is the popularity of Cycling in Southern Wales a number of events are held in the area throughout the year

Dragon RideThe Dragon Ride sets off from Bridgend on a 100 km and 150 km loop of the Rhondda and Neath valleys each June. It is a gruelling ride and only for experienced cyclists but the satisfaction gained by conquering the course is a huge reward. Complete the Dragon Ride and you will feel like a true King of the Mountains.

The National BMX Championships with its daring jumps and breathtaking stunts are held at Parc Bryn Bach near Tredegar. The BMX circuit here is unique to Wales and attracts experienced BMX riders from far and wide

The Newport Velodrome is the only facility of its kind in Southern Wales. It attracts a whole host of international track championships throughout the year.
